If you’ve done a search on Google in the last few months, you’ve seen that paid ads now dominate. Typically four ads appear at the top of the page and three at the bottom, squeezing organic (unpaid) listings into a few precious spots in the middle. (You can tell which are the ads in Google by the bold “Sponsored” text in the top left corner of the ad.)

New patients who used to find your practice listed at the top of the search results may now see your competitors listed well above you, thanks to their PPC ad. You’ve probably noticed this yourself when you’ve typed in a search query. The first 3 or 4 search results you see have bold “Sponsored” text above them in the top left corner. And you know that 91.5% of searchers never go beyond the first 10 search results (about 4.8% of intrepid searchers go beyond, but not much further).

In this case, you probably won’t want to pay for traffic coming from searches for “pediatric audiologist.”
Luckily, Google allows you to specify which keywords, phrases, and variations to target and which to exclude, known as negative keywords, so that you’re only paying for qualified leads.

Here’s one thing you can take to the bank: search engines are going to keep updating their algorithms forever.
